En dan sem se igral z UMAX Pulsar mac klonom. Hotel sem namestiti BeOS ampak mi ni nikakor ratalo, zato sem obupan odnehal. Naslednjič, ko sem prižgal UMAXa sem presenečno obstal, kajti na zaslonu ni pisalo ničesar drugega kot "Mo Moof Moooof". Tako se oglaša edino "Dogcow", po vsej verjetnosti se mi je aktiviral nekakšen "Easster Egg".

Z jabuk foruma se je že prešnje leto oglasil "jamiroq", ki je ponudil svojega nedelujočega iMaca. Ker se nisem mogel odreč ponudbi, sem ga takoj prevzel. Kasneje sicer nisem vedel kaj naj delam s pokvarjenim iMacom, iMacquariuma se mi pa ni dalo delat, ker sem enga že sestavil iz Macitnosh Classica. iMaca sem vseeno razstavil, položili mehko krpo in nastala je mačja uta. "Sash" z jabuka, ga je poimenoval iMjau, kar se zelo dobro sliši :)

Slovenski sistem 7.5

Macintosh System Software 7.5, je bil prvi Mac sistem preveden v slovenski jezik in to še pred izidom slovenskih Oken 95. Članek o tem slovenskem sistemu za Macintosh računalnike lahko preberete v reviji TIP Letnik 1, št. 9/10, november 1995 (kdo, se je še spomne?) in v Monitorju Letnik 5, št. 11, november 1995. Po dolgem času sem dobil "disk image" diskovne slike in sistem nostalgično naložil na Macintosh ColourClassica. Tako kot se je pred leti, Apple Center Jabolko iz Ljubljane trudil približat Mac OS slovenskemu uporabniku, tako tudi sedaj (upam, da še) peščica zanesenjakov skrbno prevaja Mac OS X. Do celovitega prevoda je še daleč, tudi prvi Slovenski sistem ni bil v celoti preveden, pa je bil veliko manjši (7 disket proti DVD-ju).

Beta različica sistema 7.5 se je imenovala Mozart, kasneje Capone.

Desktop Publishing ali namizno založništvo, je leta 1985 definiral Paul Brainerd. Ustanovitelj podjetja Aldus Corporation poimenovanega po renesančnem beneškem tiskarju, ki je prvi uporabil ležečo (italic) pisavo in sledil Guttenbergu očetu premičnih črk in sodobnega tiska. Tisto leto je Paul predstavil svoj program PageMaker. S pomočjo podjetja Adobe, ki je takrat že razvilo programski jezik PostScript in podjetja Apple, ki je ravno predstavilo LaserWriter, laserski tiskalnik z vgrajenim PostScriptom je PageMaker postavil nove mejnike v pripravi tiska. PageMaker je na nekakšen način tudi rešil računalnik Macintosh, saj je tako Mac dobil "ubijalski program" (killer app), ki je prodajal računalnik.

Ker sem sam zaključil srednjo šolo tiska in papirja in sem po poklicu stavec, sedaj že diplomirani inženir grafične tehnike :) sem si za spomin shranil poleg programske opreme na slikah, tudi nekaj svinčenih črk iz obdobja, ko se je stavek še ročno stavil.

Aldusa dolgo že ni več, ker ga je kupilo podjetje Adobe. Predvsem Adobovi programi so postavili mejnike sodobnega grafičnega procesa. Dela brez PDF datotek, si ne moremo več predstavljati. Sedanji program za prelom strani je InDesign.

Photoshop in Illustrator pa sta najmočnejši orodji za obdelavo 2D računalniške grafike, zaenkrat še brez konkurence ...

Če vam še kje (doma, studiu, kjerkoli ...) leži še kakšen takšen paket programske opreme vam ga z veseljem odkupim.

ZX Spectrum slovenska legenda

Pred dnevi sem "naključno" naletel na slovensko stran z ZX Spectrum igricami in med njimi opazil sliko, ki mi je obudila spomin iz otroštva. Takoj sem si pretočil emulator ZX Spectruma in igrico Jamski Heroj. Igra je sicer kopija igre "BC's Quest for Tires" katero sem igral na Atariju ST 520.

Začetki Photoshopa segajo v leto 1987 kot privatni projekt Thomasa Konll, kandidata za doktorski naziv v računalništvu in tehnologiji na ameriški univerzi v Michiganu. V dokaz njegovim tezam je napisal programski postopek, kako prikazati sivinske slike na črno-belem zaslonu. Program se je sprva imenoval »Display«, potem pa je skupaj z bratom, ki je delal v filmski industriji za posebne efekte, naredil končni izdelelek, imenovan PhotoShop. Ikona prve različice je predstavljala hiško, verjetno fotografsko prodajalno. Ikona dokumenta pa škatlico za film.

Od leve proti desni ikoni programa in datoteke; PhotoShop (1987) in Adobe Photoshop CS2 (2005)

Pod okriljem Adoba (1990) Photoshop postane zelo uspešen program za obdelavo digitalnih slik. Namesto hiške uporabijo oko v okvirju slike. Ikona datotek pa dobi ikono, ki predstavlja zaslonko.

Vse do leta 2002 Adobe Photoshop obdrži značilnost očesa. Leta 2003 pa podjetje izda paket z novim imenom – Creative Suite Celoten paket zajema Illustrator, InDesign (program za prelom in oblikovanje strani, ki zamenja PageMakerja), GoLive (program za izdelovanje spletnih strani) ter Photoshop. Zamenjava ikon pri večini oblikovalcev in uporabnikih povzroči negotovost in zmedo. Adobe seveda obdrži strategijo in čez leto dni že izda CS2 oziroma Creative Suite 2 z novimi ikonami, ki pa se oblikovno navezujejo na prejšno CS1 različico.

Kot sem že omenil, so se ljudje izgubljali v pomenu novih ikon. Spraševali so se, zakaj so zamenjali stare ikone, ki so skozi čas postale značilnost, skorajda že logotip posameznega programa. Kakšna je povezanost ikone peresa s Photoshopom ali ikona rozaste rože z illustratorjem? Pogrešali so Botticellijevo Venero, ki je že od prve različice postala zaščitni simbol Illustratorja, in »oko«, ki gleda skozi zaslonko, je bila močna značilnost Photoshopa. Na vsa ta zgoraj postavljena vprašanja se je odzvalo podjetje MetaDesign, podjetje, ki je bilo zadolženo za celostno grafično podobo Adobovega paketa CS in je preoblikovalo prejšnje značilne ikone v sedanje bolj »naravno« usmerjene. Natančnosti, lepota in pridih so bile ključne točke za preoblikovanje ikon. Naravni simboli so zadovoljili potrebo po vseh treh točkah. Omenili so, da sta Photoshop in Illustrator postala že tako močni znamki, da ni bilo potrebe po ohranitvi starih značilnosti. Peresa so bila ena izmed prvih orodij za risanje in isanje, rože pa so prisotne že v izvirni sliki Botticellijeve Venere. Glede na velik odziv pozitivnih in negativnih kritik so se ikone Adobovega CS2 paketa vrnile z isto simboliko, le barvne sheme so se bolj približale starejšim različicam. Tako so se zeleni barvni odtenki ikon Photoshopa CS1 spremenili nazaj v modrikasto zelene odtenke, rozasti odtenki ikon illustratorja pa so dobili bolj breskvasto oranžne odtenke.

Adobe nas je spet presenetil z izdajo Adobe CS3 paketa, nova podoba in nove ikone, ki niso več ikone ampak monogrami.

Apple II Retro Games

Kupil sem original Atarijeve igre za Apple II iz leta 1982-83. Igre so bile še vedno tovraniško zapakirane in pričakovano še vedno po tolkih letih delujoče. Kupil sem igro Pac-Man, Moon Patrol in Donkey Kong.

Ker se že nekaj časa ubadam z video karticami za Apple II, ki omogočajo barven priklop računalnika na TV in mi še zdaj ni uspelo, sem igre igral kar na monokromatskem zelenem monitorju.

Debugging

Včeraj sem dobesedno razhroščeval lasten računalnik. Sicer pa beseda Debugging dejansko izhaja iz legende, ko se je hrošč oz. vešča (nočni metulj), ujela v sestav takratnega računalnika Mark II iz pred 60. let. Zaradi letošnje mile zime, je veliko žuželk že prilezlo iz svoj lukenj, pri nas pa še posebej iz drv, ki jih kljub mili zimi foter z vnemo še zdaj meče v šporhet (peč).

Nesrečni hrošč je z vso močjo rinil proti navzgor in se zagozdil v zgornjem delu ohišja. Še dobro, da ni hodil po vrhu, kjer bi lahko skozi zračno režo zlezel v notranjost računalnika.

Ni mi preostalo drugega, kot da sem izklopil vse kablovje, obrnil ohišje računalnika in s pomočjo kuverte izbrckal nadležneža ven in ga napodil skozi okno.

V nedeljo sem slučajno pri skakanju med programi, zasledil - mislim, da na pomurski lokalni televizijski postaji - Windows Explorerjevo okno, ki se je kazalo čez celi zaslon. Spet ena slika, ki bo verjetno konačala v kakšni Power Point prezentaciji s smešnimi slikami zraven že znanih modrih zaslonov na letališču in znane kombonacije tipk "ctrl +alt +delete".

• Apple introduces the popular PowerBook 100, 140, 170. A look into the complex engineering that went into these models... mockups, pencil drawings, comments on SONY building the PowerBook 100. Items like the introduction of the palm-rest, keyboards we use today are discussed. Employee Intro where new features are shown. Funny!
• Macs in Space. A quick clip of how the 1.4MB SuperDrive reacts in Space. Great stuff!
• Early Mac Animations. In 1988, Apple was eager to show off the graphics power of its 68020 line of computers. First up, a group of talented artists produced "Pencil Test," an animated short created entirely on a Macintosh II. Animations: Tempest, Her Majesty's Secret Serpent, Pigment Promenade, The Audition and Splash Dance are also shown. John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton of Pixar fame are listed in the credits.
• Steve Wozniak along with David Cram discuss ESD, (electrostatic discharge), in a rather entertaining video about how static electricity can harm Service Parts. Good for teaching on this subject, one of the BEST. Not as boring as it sounds!
• Mac vs. PC. In a well done feature, Apple goes head to head with OS/2 and early Windows. Many of the comparisons hold true today. It's quite an eye opening video, fun to watch.
• Macintoshes building Macintoshes. Apple's pride and joy, the $20-million, ultra modern Fremont facility where many early Macs were made. Shows the Mac SE and Mac II being built, tour of entire plant. Processes and testing to make each logicboard, etc. This factory can produce one Mac every 27 seconds. Interesting!

• The Making of "1984". Rather amazing video covering the behind the scenes work of Apple's famous 1984 commercial. Lee Clow of Chiat/Day talks of his first visit with Burrell, Andy and Steve. Ridley Scott of Blade Runner and BBC fame is interviewed on how it was filmed, how they hired 150 skinheads, how they arrived at using an Athlete for the Sledgehammer toss, at... "Karl Marx". Other great info, they bought three Airplanes, then dismantled them for props, 747 engines are on the back walls, also notice the Mac Introduction was scheduled for January 19th, not January 24th. Filmed at Sheperton Studios, London. Full Screen Versions of 1984. Exceedingly Interesting.
• The late Douglas Adams gives us a tour of the recently announced PowerBook Duo. He begins with his vision of a computing device he concieved for Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy, then walks us through how the new Duo has become this device. Well done by a famous Mac User.
• Several 3-4 minute clips on US West, Pizza Hut, FedEx and Allied Signal. Circa about 1988 when the GUI was still new inside large corporations. Early eMail, funny! Filmed with typical Apple flare.
• Historic agreement between Apple, IBM and Motorola (AIM) All the characters are there, Sculley, Spindler, Kalida & Taligent. Part PowerPC microprocessor plan. Part a plan to build a next generation microcomputer operating system. This new OS was to run on any hardware platform. It was also to be completely object-oriented from the ground up. The PowerPC portion lives on to this day.
• 1997 MacWorld Boston Keynote. A pivotal moment in Apple's history. Steve has returned, the existing Board of Directors has been let go, Steve makes peace with Microsoft, Bill Gates is tricked into appearing as George Orwell on a huge screen... to Boos and Hisses by the audience. Great stuff!

Great stuff.
• The Martinettis Bring Home a Computer. Well produced story on the effects of having a new Apple Macintosh in the family. It's an infomercial for sure, but the production values make it like a small film. Entertaining!
• Apple Business. This is the first extensive video produced showing Apple's complete Business Strategy with AppleTalk, LaserWriter and unique graphics based software.
• Early Apple Networking - A real eye opener, interviews with the inventor of "AppleTalk", among others. Intro of TCP/IP to Apple's OS. How the early MacOS (System 7) interoperates with Mainframes, Mini, global networks.

Že kar nekaj časa po spletu iščem sliko diskete (disk image), katero je Steve Jobs na srečanju Apple delničarjev leta 1984 vstavil v računalnik Mac na prvi javni predstavitvi Macintosha

Pisal sem tudi Andy Hertzfeldu enemu prvih programerjev Macintosh programske opreme. Njegova spletna stran Folklore.org pripoveduje zgodbe raznih taktratnih programerjev in inženirjev, ki so delali na projektu Macintosh. Vse zgodbe so tudi izdane v njegovi knjigi Revolution in The Valley. Andy mi je odpisal, da je na žalost disketo nekje založil :(
